Offshore wind turbine foundations may cool ocean surface

Recent findings from the PELAgIO ECOWind project highlight how offshore wind farm infrastructure interacts with marine environments. Specifically, turbine foundations can alter seawater mixing patterns. This physical disturbance may lead to localized cooling of the ocean surface. Researchers note that the exact environmental impact heavily depends on prevailing local conditions.

Seafloor sediments reveal East Antarctic ice sheet advance

Researchers from Kiel University and the Alfred Wegener Institute have investigated a massive sedimentary body off the coast of East Antarctica. Located in Vincennes Bay, this structure provides crucial insights into past glacial behavior. The feature, known as a grounding-zone wedge, is approximately 260 meters high and stretches 65 kilometers long. It stands as the largest known isolated wedge of its kind on a glaciated continental shelf.
