How 'Whalefall' Production Designer Built the Creature's Stomach

Production designer Ramsey Avery faced a unique challenge when designing the sets for the new survival film 'Whalefall'. The movie follows a diver who gets swallowed by a sperm whale and must escape with limited oxygen. To achieve an authentic and claustrophobic look, Avery relied on practical effects, constructing a 30-foot whale head and using unusual materials like mattress foam and silicone bits to mimic the inside of the stomach.

Director Brian Duffield on Filming Inside a Whale's Stomach

Director Brian Duffield tackled a massive cinematic challenge with his new film, 'Whalefall,' distributed by 20th Century Studios. The movie follows a young diver, played by Austin Abrams, who gets swallowed by a whale and must escape before running out of oxygen. Shooting inside a cramped, 360-degree practical set on a rocking gimbal proved to be an extreme logistical puzzle. Crew members had to physically jump on the set to simulate the whale crushing the protagonist, leaving studio safety reps baffled.
