New ICANN Domain Applications Reveal AI-Centric Future

ICANN has officially opened the application process for new top-level domains, drawing over 1,600 submissions from hundreds of entities. The current landscape is heavily dominated by artificial intelligence, with major industry players like OpenAI and Meta competing for suffixes such as .agent, .agi, and .superintelligence. Beyond AI-focused terms, many corporations are pursuing branded domains to consolidate their online presence. While the long-term success of non-traditional domain extensions remains uncertain, the aggressive pursuit of these digital assets highlights their continued strategic importance in branding and user navigation.

Bluesky wants to give you your own domain on the open web

Social media platform Bluesky has applied to become an official internet domain suffix, specifically seeking approval for ".bsky". If successful, the initiative would allow users to transition from traditional handles to much shorter and cleaner web addresses. According to company leadership, the initiative is designed to strengthen user ownership over digital identity. However, the approval process overseen by ICANN is expected to take between 18 and 24 months to complete. Bluesky has stated that it does not intend to monetize or sell the domains, diverging from standard industry practices. Company executives emphasize that the move reflects a core commitment to supporting the open web.
