Hugging Face Chief Policy Officer Warns AI Evaluators Face Barriers

At a recent industry summit, Hugging Face's Chief Policy Officer Irene Solaiman cautioned that establishing reliable third-party evaluators within artificial intelligence laboratories is far more complex than many tech companies acknowledge. While major developers promote independent benchmarking to verify model performance and safety, current evaluation methodologies remain inconsistent, expensive, and difficult to standardize. Solaiman emphasized that true trust in AI evaluations depends on reproducibility and open access to model weights. Furthermore, as AI shifts toward autonomous agentic systems, assessing performance requires evaluating the full software ecosystem—including user harnesses and software tooling—rather than analyzing standalone base models in isolation.
