Stratospheric winds can warn of extreme energy demand in Europe
Recent research reveals that disruptions in normal polar winter winds significantly increase the probability of extreme cold snaps and energy demand spikes across Europe. Normally, strong and stable westerly winds circle high above the Arctic during the winter season, forming what scientists refer to as the stratospheric polar vortex. When this system breaks down, it can alter weather patterns dramatically.
