What is pneumonic plague and how does it spread?
Pneumonic plague is a severe, virulent lung infection caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It is the most dangerous form of the disease, often resulting from complications of bubonic or septicaemic plague. Following a death at a Russian research facility, global health authorities are investigating the incident. While the disease remains endemic in rodent populations worldwide, modern antibiotics and surveillance help manage its impact.
