Reaching Net Zero Sooner Could Limit Pacific Climate Shifts
New climate modeling indicates that achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions more quickly can help mitigate long-lasting disruptions in the tropical Pacific. Specifically, rapid reductions would limit El Niño-like shifts in the region's climate patterns. However, researchers also caution that due to the massive amount of heat stored deep within the ocean, some climate alterations in the tropical Pacific may persist for centuries regardless of mitigation speed.
