Public Health Strategies for Firearms Inspired by Anti-Smoking Models
A new paper from the Annenberg Public Policy Center suggests that public health strategies successfully used to curb cigarette smoking could serve as a model for reducing the appeal and use of firearms, especially handguns. The research explores how shifting cultural norms, taxation, public education, and regulatory frameworks historically applied to tobacco might be adapted to address gun violence and firearm ownership.
