Why some Indigenous communities don't resist oil extraction
More than half of the Ecuadorian Amazon has been marked for oil drilling, directly overlapping with Indigenous territories and areas of high biodiversity. While the ecological and cultural impacts of this extraction are well documented and have sparked prominent environmental movements across Latin America, local responses are far from uniform. At the community level, oil extraction is not always met with fierce resistance. Understanding these dynamics requires looking beyond broad environmental narratives to examine the complex local realities, economic pressures, and community-level decisions within these affected territories.
