Brazilian Academy Members Issue Open Letter on Presidential Election
Prominent Brazilian members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have released an open letter expressing deep concern regarding the upcoming second round of Brazil's presidential elections. Signatories include Oscar nominees and winners such as Wagner Moura, Kleber Mendonça Filho, and Fernando Meirelles. The letter calls for close international attention to the October 25 runoff between current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro. It highlights fears over democratic norms, alleged foreign interference, and potential threats to Brazil's cultural and audiovisual sectors.
