Canada indefinitely suspends assisted dying for mental illness
Canada has announced an indefinite suspension of its plans to expand its medically assisted dying framework to individuals whose sole underlying condition is a mental illness. Justice Minister Sean Fraser stated that the decision was made due to a lack of consensus within the medical community and society regarding eligibility and the irremediable nature of certain psychological conditions. The policy reversal delays the scheduled March 2027 rollout, following earlier delays and recommendations from a parliamentary panel to exclude mental health conditions from the programme.
