Spanish pensioner whose eviction sparked nationwide protests dies
Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old Spanish pensioner who was forcibly removed from her apartment of over 70 years, has passed away. Her dramatic eviction in September sparked nationwide protests and intense debate over housing rights in Spain. The incident drew widespread public outrage after footage showed her being carried out on a stretcher from her Madrid home. The case became a powerful symbol of the housing crisis facing vulnerable elderly populations in urban centers.
