Mandalorian and Grogu VFX Vet Hal Hickel on Phil Tippett and Rotta
Industrial Light & Magic animation supervisor Hal Hickel recently discussed the visual effects behind Jon Favreau's upcoming film 'The Mandalorian and Grogu'. Speaking at the View Conference in Turin, Hickel explained how the production blended digital animation with practical effects, mechanical rigs, and traditional stop-motion techniques inspired by pioneer Phil Tippett. Hickel detailed the creative approach to iconic elements like the AT-AT walkers, emphasizing heavier, slower movements to convey massive scale. The production also utilized full-sized interior sets and revisited historical animation tests from previous franchise installments to maintain aesthetic continuity.
