Cambridge Heavy Industries Builds Desktop Fusion Device

Cambridge Heavy Industries, a stealth startup based near MIT, has developed a compact, benchtop laser-powered fusion device. Unlike massive industrial fusion facilities, this modular reactor enables rapid experimentation, allowing for dozens of daily test shots to refine designs using AI simulations. The startup recently secured $6.2 million in seed funding led by Azolla Ventures. Its innovative approach uses a minimized number of lasers—specifically two main lasers—to compress a fuel target through precisely timed rings of light, generating high pressures with relatively low power.
