Eritrean troops move deep into Ethiopia's Tigray region, residents say
Residents in Ethiopia's Tigray region have reported that soldiers from neighboring Eritrea have crossed the border and are moving deep into the territory. This development comes amid renewed clashes between the national army and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). The fighting follows months of rising tensions and the collapse of a 2022 peace agreement that had ended a devastating two-year civil war. Both the Ethiopian government and the TPLF blame each other for the renewed outbreak of hostilities. Adding to the regional instability, Ethiopia and Eritrea recently severed diplomatic relations. The deployment of foreign troops into the conflict zone raises serious concerns about a wider regional escalation.
