Anti-Migrant Violence Erupts in South Africa Over Asylum Ruling
South Africa has been rocked by violent anti-migrant protests in Soweto and Durban, resulting in dozens of torched vehicles and looted shops. The unrest was triggered by anger over a recent court ruling requiring the government to process certain asylum applications. Police deployed rubber bullets and reinforcements to contain the clashes between residents and foreign nationals. Officials have strongly condemned the destruction while clarifying that the court decision does not grant automatic legal status to migrants.
