Waldorf Salad
A classic, refreshing crisp salad combining sweet apples, crunchy celery, and toasted walnuts in a creamy dressing.
Ingredients
- •2 crisp red apples, such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith, cored and diced
- •1 cup celery stalks, thinly sliced
- •1/2 cup walnuts, roughly chopped
- •1/2 cup red seedless grapes, halved
- •1/3 cup mayonnaise
- •2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt
- •1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- •1 tablespoon honey
- •1/4 teaspoon salt
- •2 cups crisp lettuce leaves, for serving
Instructions
- 1
Place the chopped walnuts in a dry skillet over medium heat and toast them for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant and golden brown, then set aside to cool.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, Greek yogurt, fresh lemon juice, honey, and salt until smooth and well combined.
- 3
Add the diced apples and immediately toss them in the dressing mixture to prevent them from browning.
- 4
Add the sliced celery, halved grapes, and cooled toasted walnuts to the bowl.
- 5
Gently toss all the ingredients together until evenly coated with the dressing.
- 6
Line a serving platter or individual bowls with fresh lettuce leaves and spoon the Waldorf salad generously on top before serving.
💡 Chef tips
- Tossing the diced apples in the lemon juice and dressing immediately prevents oxidation and keeps them bright.
- For a dairy-free and strictly pareve version, use all mayonnaise instead of combining it with Greek yogurt.
- You can make this salad a few hours in advance, but add the toasted walnuts just before serving to maintain their maximum crunch.
✅ How it should turn out
The finished Waldorf salad should look vibrant and creamy, smell of toasted nuts and fresh fruit, and taste delightfully crisp, tart, and sweet.
