Nitrogen fixation off switch discovery may help crops make fertilizer
Researchers have advanced our understanding of nitrogen fixation by identifying a critical regulatory mechanism. Although nitrogen makes up most of our atmosphere, most plants cannot use it directly without synthetic fertilizers. This new insight into how microbes manage nitrogenase enzymes could eventually allow staple crops to produce their own fertilizer. Such a breakthrough would transform modern agriculture and reduce environmental pollution.
