Astronomers Discover Closest Pair of Supermassive Black Holes

Researchers have identified a unique pair of supermassive black holes actively consuming matter within a galaxy from the early universe. Located approximately 2 billion years after the Big Bang, this system represents the most compact dual active galactic nucleus ever observed at such a significant distance. The proximity of these two objects, separated by only 175 parsecs, offers scientists a rare opportunity to study the dynamics of galaxy mergers and black hole growth in the primordial cosmos. This discovery challenges existing models regarding how quickly such massive structures can form and interact.
