Brazilian Cinema at Risk: Reflections from the Rio Film Festival
At the Rio Film Festival, renowned Brazilian filmmakers and actors gathered under the shadow of high-stakes presidential elections. Director Marcelo Gomes and festival director Ilda Santiago emphasized cinema's vital role as a diplomatic tool and cultural pillar, heavily reliant on government support. The discussions highlighted a tense atmosphere as the film community rallied behind President Lula, contrasting sharply with fears of stagnation under far-right leadership. With recent international triumphs like Walter Salles' Oscar win, the industry's future hangs in the balance.
