New Charges Expected Against Former Venezuelan Leader Nicolás Maduro
Federal prosecutors in the United States are reportedly preparing to file additional criminal charges against former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores. These new allegations center on their alleged involvement in the mistreatment and torture of American citizens previously detained within Venezuelan correctional facilities. Maduro and Flores were apprehended during a covert operation in Caracas earlier this year and are currently awaiting trial in New York on existing counts of drug trafficking and weapons offenses. Their legal defense team maintains that the proceedings are politically motivated and asserts that Maduro possesses sovereign immunity.
