Number of Cars in Israel Doubles in 20 Years, Worsening Congestion
Over the past two decades between 2005 and 2025, the total number of motor vehicles in Israel has doubled. During this same period, overall vehicle mileage rose by 66%, reflecting a dramatic increase in traffic volume across the national road network. However, road infrastructure development failed to keep pace with vehicle growth, as total road surface area expanded by only 31%. This widening gap between vehicle adoption and infrastructure expansion has created chronic traffic congestion across major urban and intercity routes.
