AfD Candidate Elected Speaker of German Regional Parliament

For the first time since World War Two, a far-right party member has secured the position of speaker in a German regional parliament. Tobias Rausch of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won the vote in Saxony-Anhalt with support from MPs outside his own party. Opponents have condemned the development as a watershed moment and a breach of the post-war political firewall against the far right. Protesters gathered outside the parliament building in Magdeburg holding banners denouncing the election.
