ITV Studios Unveils New Dramas and Formats at Mipcom Amid Sale Process

Key Takeaways

  • ITV Studios showcased 11 fresh original formats at the Mipcom market in Cannes.
  • Key projects include new dramas with Andrea Riseborough and Jeremy Wade's return.
  • ITV is splitting, with Sky acquiring the broadcast arm while Studios remains standalone.
  • The U.S. version of 'Love Island' was highlighted as a record-breaking streaming success.

ITV Studios launched its presence at the Mipcom market in Cannes with a high-profile breakfast gathering, demonstrating its resilience and ambition by showcasing a robust slate of new and returning scripted and unscripted series. Among the major highlights presented to attendees was a diverse lineup featuring high-profile projects, including a lunar-bound drama starring Andrea Riseborough, the expansion of "The Voice" format to Estonia, and the return of popular U.K. natural history host Jeremy Wade for new fish stories.

Speaking to journalists on Monday morning, Ruth Berry, ITV Studios’ president of global partnerships and its Zoo 55 digital content arm, emphasized the remarkable scale of their current offerings. She pointed out that ITV Studios is actively representing no less than 11 fresh original formats at this year’s Mipcom gathering. This achievement is particularly notable given the wider global downturn in traditional series commissioning and the general disruption affecting large production groups across the entertainment sector.

When asked about the ongoing M&A fever gripping the global content marketplace and whether it had impacted ITV's daily operations, Berry offered a direct and confident response. Stating "in a word, no," she pointed directly to the ambitious slate as proof of uninterrupted business momentum, describing the upcoming content offerings as absolute corkers. Her sentiments were further echoed by Mike Beale, ITV Studios’ managing director of creative networks, who underscored the company's strategic adaptation to modern industry pressures through innovative partnerships.

Beale emphasized that the studio is actively pairing traditional broadcasters and digital streamers together to co-commission new shows. This collaborative strategy successfully opens up new financing and distribution opportunities for fresh formats in a competitive global landscape. Meanwhile, the broader corporate structure surrounding the studio is undergoing a significant transformation. ITV itself is currently in the process of being cleaved into two separate firms. Under the transaction, NBCUniversal's Sky is in the midst of acquiring the ITV broadcast and digital platform division. Consequently, ITV Studios will remain an independent standalone entity, although industry acquisition rumors surrounding its future continue to circulate.

Despite these structural changes, ITV Studios remains in an exceptionally strong position to shape industry trends, largely buoyed by the worldwide phenomenon and sustained success of formats like "Love Island." Berry proudly noted during the showcase that the U.S. edition of the hit dating series currently holds the record as the most-watched program ever on NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service. By balancing legacy hits with fresh digital experiments, such as Jeremy Wade's new video podcast series, ITV Studios continues to prove its adaptability and commercial power.
