Swedish actor Gustaf Skarsgård, best known internationally for his work in the hit historical drama "Vikings," is stepping behind the camera for the very first time. Production has officially begun on his feature directorial debut, a psychological horror film titled "The Cannibal." The film promises to be a tense, atmospheric exploration of creativity and torment, diving headfirst into the fragile psychology of a struggling artist.

The screenplay for the project was penned by Peter Birro, setting up a narrative that functions as a nightmarish journey into a screenwriter's mind. The plot follows a writer who retreats to Ingmar Bergman's legendary home island of Fårö in a desperate search for creative inspiration. However, instead of finding the artistic breakthrough he so desperately needs, he finds himself confronting darker psychological forces.

Production kicked off on a Tuesday on Fårö, located off Sweden's east coast, and is scheduled to continue through the end of November. In a significant coup for the production team, filming locations include areas directly in and around Bergman's estate. The Bergman Estate on Fårö Foundation has granted the filmmakers special access to these historic grounds, adding an authentic layer of cinematic history to the eerie psychological drama.

The cast features notable Scandinavian talent, with Ardalan Esmaili stepping into the lead role of David, the troubled screenwriter. Esmaili, whose previous credits include "The Charmer," "The Helicopter Heist," and "Lockerbie – a Search for Truth," portrays a man grappling with a severe creative crisis, ghosts from his past, and the heavy psychological weight of Bergman's legacy. Meanwhile, actor Claes Ljungmark, known for "Borg McEnroe" and the television series "Top Dog," is set to portray the legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman himself.

Speaking about the daunting task of setting a film in the shadow of one of cinema's greatest masters, Gustaf Skarsgård acknowledged the immense pressure. He noted that there is simply no way to approach Bergman except from deep within the gigantic cinematic shadow that the titan casts. Skarsgård added that just as the main character David attempts to break free from this demonic magnetism, the movie itself will attempt to break free in a playful manner by utilizing Bergman's own artistic tools.

Writer Peter Birro shared a deeply personal connection to the project and its setting. He recalled that when he was a young screenwriter, he had the rare opportunity to meet Ingmar Bergman on his desolate island of Fårö. According to Birro, the legendary director spoke candidly about his demons and even showed him where he supposedly kept them locked away in a freezer. Birro noted that for thirty years, he has carried the desire to open that metaphorical freezer and explore those creative ghosts on film.
