Grilled Cheese Sandwich
The ultimate comfort food featuring crispy, golden-brown buttered bread loaded with perfectly melted, gooey cheese.
Ingredients
- •8 slices sturdy white or sourdough bread
- •4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- •2 cups freshly shredded cheddar cheese (about 8 ounces)
- •1 cup freshly shredded mozzarella or Gruyere cheese (about 4 ounces)
Instructions
- 1
Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
- 2
Lay the bread slices out on a clean work surface and butter one side of each slice evenly.
- 3
Flip four slices over so the buttered sides are face down, and divide the shredded cheese mixtures evenly among them.
- 4
Top each with the remaining bread slices, buttered sides facing up.
- 5
Place the sandwiches onto the preheated skillet and cover with a lid to help the cheese melt faster.
- 6
Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the bottom slices are golden brown and crispy.
- 7
Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes until the other side is golden and the cheese is completely melted and gooey.
- 8
Remove from the heat, let cool for a minute, then slice in half and serve immediately.
💡 Chef tips
- Always use medium-low heat so the bread does not burn before the cheese has a chance to melt completely.
- Shred your own cheese from a block instead of using pre-bagged shredded cheese for a much smoother and stretchier melt.
- Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise instead of butter on the outside of the bread for an ultra-crispy crust.
✅ How it should turn out
The finished sandwich should have a deeply golden, shatteringly crisp crust with rich, stretchy, melted cheese oozing from the center.
