Scientists aboard a research flight originally bound for Oregon shifted their course in August to investigate massive storm clouds fueled by intense wildfires in Utah. The mission required rapid coordination between ground support staff, pilots, and air traffic controllers. This unexpected redirection allowed researchers to collect rare airborne observations of pyrocumulonimbus clouds, which are extreme weather events generated by wildfires.
