Light and ultrasound reveal renewable routes for pharmaceuticals

Sustainable practices in the pharmaceutical industry extend far beyond packaging materials, reaching deeply into how essential chemical compounds and ingredients are synthesized. Traditional methods often rely heavily on fossil feedstocks, extreme temperatures, strong oxidants, and heavy metals that increase both financial costs and purification complexities. Recent scientific investigations led by the Colmenares research group at the IPC PAS demonstrate that cleaner, more sustainable chemistry can be achieved at the fundamental level of single chemical bonds. These findings open new pathways for reducing the environmental footprint of drug discovery and manufacturing.
