MPs seek to overturn ruling stopping police from being sued
Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum are pushing to reverse a controversial 2025 Court of Appeal ruling that shields police officers from civil lawsuits. The judgment protects law enforcement from being sued for negligence, dishonesty, or investigative failings during criminal proceedings. Lawmakers have submitted a legislative amendment to counteract the ruling, while a separate Supreme Court appeal is also examining the decision. The move follows a case where a domestic violence victim had her secret address exposed by police negligence, forcing her to flee once again.
