Brain cells regulate cholesterol to control neuron signaling
Recent research reveals that cholesterol plays a crucial role in how neurons communicate, moving beyond its traditional association with cardiovascular health. Scientists at WashU Medicine discovered that specific brain cells, known as astrocytes, manage the supply of cholesterol to modulate neuronal signaling. The findings, published in the Journal of Cell Biology and led by Prof. Vitaly A. Klyachko, shed new light on the fundamental mechanisms governing brain function and information processing.
