Orangutans released back into Borneo forest after fires
Eight critically endangered orangutans have been successfully released back into the wild in Borneo. The apes were previously rescued by conservationists after intense summer wildfires threatened their natural habitats. International Animal Rescue Indonesia and local authorities coordinated the release of three mothers, their daughters, and two adult males into a secure reserve. The region's dry season fires were exacerbated by the El Niño weather phenomenon, destroying vital forest areas.
