Study Finds Brighter Street Lighting Reduces Violent Crime

A recent study conducted by researchers at Rutgers University–Newark reveals that installing LED streetlights in urban crime hot spots significantly decreases illicit activities. The research, published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology, evaluated the impact of enhanced lighting on neighborhood safety. According to the findings, the initiative successfully reduced violent crime by nearly 46% and cut burglaries by 58% in the targeted areas. These results highlight the effectiveness of environmental design and infrastructure upgrades in deterring crime.
