Ghost Particles from Space Telescope Wins 2026 Physics Nobel
Belgian-born physicist Prof Francis Halzen has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his visionary leadership in developing the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Located at the South Pole, this unique facility uses a cubic kilometer of Antarctic ice to detect elusive subatomic particles known as neutrinos. These 'ghost particles' originate from violent, high-energy events in the distant universe. By capturing these rare signals, Halzen’s work has opened a new window into astronomy, allowing scientists to study cosmic phenomena that remain invisible to traditional light-based telescopes.
