Superheavy-Element Compound Shows Weaker Bonds from Relativity
An international research collaboration, led by scientists from GSI/FAIR in Darmstadt, Germany, has successfully measured the chemical stability of a superheavy element compound for the very first time. The findings reveal that the compound exhibits a weaker-than-expected chemical bond, a phenomenon directly attributed to profound relativistic effects operating at the extreme atomic scale of superheavy elements.
