Science and Community Knowledge in Indonesian Coral Reef Conservation

Researchers from Hasanuddin University assessed coral reef conditions in Indonesia's Spermonde Archipelago using advanced underwater photography and drone surveys. By combining scientific metrics with local community perspectives, the study aimed to evaluate the health of these vital marine ecosystems. The findings revealed higher live coral cover in clearer waters, highlighting the impact of environmental factors. However, the assessment also indicated limited community readiness to actively participate in current conservation initiatives. To bridge this gap, researchers suggest that targeted training and stronger institutional support could empower local populations, ultimately strengthening their vital role in protecting and restoring Indonesian coral reefs.
