Bank of England reveals four animals for new redesigned banknotes
The Bank of England has announced that the Atlantic puffin, barn owl, buff-tailed bumblebee, and European hedgehog will feature on its upcoming redesigned banknotes. The selection follows a massive public engagement campaign where nearly half a million people cast over 2.5 million votes from an initial shortlist of 18 creatures curated by wildlife experts. While historical figures like Sir Winston Churchill are being replaced on the currency—a move that has drawn criticism from some politicians—the central bank emphasizes that the change will celebrate the UK's rich biodiversity. Additionally, officials note that the intricate designs of these animals will enhance the overall security features of the physical money.
