Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal has officially lent his support to the independent short film "Mary Is Missing," signing on as an executive producer. The project holds a personal connection for the actor, having been filmed in Maynooth, the town where Mescal grew up. Alongside his other high-profile global acting commitments, Mescal decided to champion this distinct piece of Irish cinema to help it reach a broader global audience.
"Mary Is Missing" is an Irish psychological thriller directed by Aisling Byrne and produced by Killian Coyle for Run of the Mill and Arcade Film. The film stands out for its unique production background, having been developed through a collaborative 12-week writers' room alongside learning-disabled artists. Thirteen of the nineteen cast members are artists with intellectual disabilities, who actively contributed their own ideas regarding characters, core themes, and the overarching narrative structure.
The story centers on a care worker named Mary who vanishes without a trace from the Yellow Tree Day Service. When Garda Foley arrives to conduct the investigation, the attendees of the service—who happen to be among the last people to see Mary—become the primary witnesses. However, as their testimonies begin to contradict each other and drift into increasingly fantastical territory, the investigator faces a complex puzzle. He must decipher whether the witnesses are speaking the truth, shielding Mary, protecting themselves, or if an entirely different reality is at play.
The ensemble cast features a mix of seasoned talent and disabled artists, including Mark Smith, Derek McSweeney, Eoghan Ashe, Ella-Jane Moore, Jackie O’Hagan, John Egan, Keith Foley, Maurice Coll, Neil Coffey, Teresa Flood, Wesley Fairbrother, Lucy Smith, and Conor Begley. Lloyd Cooney stars as Garda Foley, supported by care workers Lauren Larkin and Craig Connolly, as well as Danny O’Connor, Clare Monnelly, and Kamilla Fenger.
For director Aisling Byrne and producer Killian Coyle, "Mary Is Missing" marks their third Oscar-qualifying short film together, following previous successful projects like "Headspace" and "Turnaround." Their earlier works have achieved considerable critical acclaim, including Grand Prix wins, festival selections, IFTA nominations, and acquisition by major platforms like Disney+. Building on this momentum, Byrne and Coyle are currently collaborating on developing her debut feature film, which has been selected for Screen Ireland's Perspectives scheme.
Mescal expressed deep admiration for the film's bold creative choices and its unique collaborative spirit, noting that the lived experiences of the participating artists infuse every single frame with originality. By stepping into the executive producer role, Mescal hopes to elevate disabled storytelling and shine a light on local independent Irish filmmaking on an international stage.
